Hospital Scrambles To Find Patients Before Freezer Failure Ruins 830 Vaccines

After a freezer compressor failed overnight at the Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Medical Center in Mendocino County, CA, 830 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine were put in jeopardy. At the time of discovery, staff had 2 hours to administer the vaccines before the would become ineffective. Hospital staff and Mendocino County Public Health worked quickly to give out the vaccines to high-risk populations and other qualifying groups before the time limit was up. They successfully administered all of the vaccines and logged them into the health database so that none went to waste.
